Examination of Educational Philosophy of¡¸Kano Jigoro¡¯s Judo¡¹and Its Educational Values as School Physical Education Material

Abstract
This study intended to investigate a tendency to pursue intrinsic values of the subject of Judo in Japanese school physical education by examining ideological development of Judo and its originator¡¯s educational philosophy. It also investigated educational properties and values of Judo as a teaching material in Japanese schools, tried to understand unique mental culture of Judo inherent in Judo training, and examined Judo education philosophy and idea of Gano jigoro, who is an originator of Judo. First, as one of distinctive martial arts handed down in Japan, Judo aims at performing physical training and mental culture. Dating back to old times, it was completed by Gano jigoro into pedagogy for forming human beings in today¡¯s form. Second, objectives and educational philosophy of Judo education advocated by Gano jigoro have three key educational methodologies of physical training, contest, and mental culture, and a tendency can be observed to value cultivation of attitude toward respect for their own culture and tradition through school martial education in educational circle and entire society in the process of the change in Japanese school martial education. Third, the key of Gano jigoro¡¯s Judo idea was ¡¯making good use of energy¡¯ by combining principles of using and utilizing energy to the utmost and of producing the maximum effects with the minimum efforts, and the Judo doctrine called ¡¯self-others mutual prosperity¡¯ was completed by combining spirits of cooperation and mutual concession, co-existence and mutual prosperity, and harmony and mutual assistance for principles of maintaining and developing social life. Fourth, educational ideology and objectives of Judo as a school education material was found to be ¡¯cultivating integral, correct, and brave social human beings with an educational content and objective of Judo idea for formation of human beings by Judo training.¡¯Fifth, conclusion was drawn that it would be desirable in realizing educational values as a school education material to practice educational virtues inherent in educational philosophy and idea for Gano jigoro¡¯s Judo and develop it in educational practice with a key of practical method to form human beings through Judo training for an ultimate goal of Judo education as a school education material.
